Cholera today causes an estimated 140,000 deaths worldwide each year, according to World Health Organization, and untreated can prove fatal within hours. Today about 80% of cases can be successfully treated, not so in the 1800s.
The second wave of Cholera outbreaks occurred 1829-1837, reaching London in 1832. Devon was second only to London in the scope of the outbreak.
Anne King died October 1832 in Newton Abbott, Devon. She was listed in the burial register of Wolborough Parish as the first in the parish to die of Cholera Morbus and was buried 28 October 1832.
Anne Roberts 1787-1832 was widow of Elias Clampitt, with whom she had four children, and wife of James King with whom she had one son.
